What is Alkaline Water?

What is Alkaline Water?

Put simply, alkaline water is drinking water that’s less acidic than your run of the mill tap water. Pure water is neutral with a pH ranking of 7.0, neither an acid nor a base. It is the reference point for acids and bases. Although the pH of pure water is 7 (neutral), most drinking water and natural water exhibits a variation in pH range because it contains dissolved minerals, gasses and municipal additives such as chlorine and flouride. Water with a pH less than 7 is considered acidic; whereas water with a pH higher than 7 is considered basic, or alkaline. Advocates of alkaline water believe that it can offset the acid in your bloodstream and help you metabolize nutrients more effectively, leading to better health and performance.

But Why is Alkaline Drinking Water Good For Me?

Your body will function more efficiently when it’s alkaline pH balanced. An unhealthy diet, stress and a lack of exercise can all contribute to an improper pH balance. Eating fried foods, red meat & carbs only add to this issue. Drinking alkaline water and reducing the alkalinity of the foods and liquids you intake can help to better regulate your body’s pH levels. Read on to learn more about the health benefits of drinking alkaline water.

Health Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Water:

An unhealthy diet, stress and a lack of exercise can all contribute to an improper pH balance. Eating fried foods, red meat & carbs only add to this issue. Drinking alkaline water and/or using alkaline concentrate drops daily can help neutralize acid in your blood stream.

Alkaline water with a higher pH functions as an antioxidant. Mineral-rich, high-alkaline antioxidant water can neutralize damaging free radicals because alkaline rich water has the potential to give up electrons. This acts as a neutralizing agent, effectively blocking free-radical damage. Ionized alkaline drinking water seeks out these harmful free radicals converting them into oxygen which your body can use.

Electrolytes are minerals in your blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge. Electrolytes are critical to every function in the body. They play key roles in keeping water balanced both inside and outside of cells so muscles and organs continue to work properly. When electrolyte levels are off, muscles can become weak (or contract too severely). Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can adversely impact health and exercise performance. Drinking electrolyte mineral-infused water is a much healthier way to give the body what it needs.

Alkaline drinking water contains important alkaline minerals such as magnesium and calcium which can be extremely re-hydrating and leave you feeling more energized. This is a result of filtering via electrolysis. The process of making alkaline water using electrolysis filtration and ionization removes contaminants, leaving only the desired vital minerals.

Not only does alkaline drinking water arguably provide you the best hydration potential possible; it also replenishes necessary organic alkaline minerals that help to naturally expel toxins. Detoxifying your body tends remove typical acidic waste from your daily food routine. Alkaline water is also believed to remove toxins that accumulate in your body from pollution of the environment. Drinking alkaline water or using alkaline concentrate drops can help neutralize the acidic builds-up that occurs in your body and flushes acid waste byproducts from cells & tissues.

Alkaline Water vs Acid Reflux

acid-reflux1Most people who drink alkaline water do it primarily for hydration purposes. For this reason it’s big with athletes, trainers and other health professionals. Most will recommend it as a more efficient way to stay hydrated and flush the acids from your muscles so that they recover more quickly. While alkaline water is a growing trend, there is a lot of serious chemistry behind it that you want to understand before you start consuming it on a regular basis. People with kidney problems as one example should be extremely careful.

What Separates Alkaline Water From Regular Water?

So how is it really different from traditional bottled or tap water? Alkaline water has a pH level that’s over 7 – as a result of this it has a lower concentration of hydrogen ions. Any liquid can be measured on the pH scale for alkalinity or acidity. The scale measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a liquid based on 0 to 14 point spread where anything under seven is acidic, 7 is neutral and anything above seven is alkaline. Items like baking soda are on the alkaline side and things like vinegar and coffee fall on the acidic side of the scale.

There are a lot of different things being said about alkaline water and while not all of them are 100% verifiable, a lot of them are. As an example one of the proven health benefits that has real scientific data behind it is the fact that it actually helps treat symptoms of acid reflux. When doing your research you’ll notice a lot of articles say things to the effect of: “Alkaline water? Well people say it works but there’s no scientific studies behind it to prove that”  That’s just not true, there are is plenty of scientific data behind a lot of these claims.

Alkaline Water’s Proven Effectiveness Against Acid Reflux

By far the most verifiable claim is the way alkaline water deals with the symptoms of acid reflux. Below we lay out methods, results and conclusions from a respected scientific study which proves that there are real documented studies proving alkaline water is an effective treatment for acid reflux.

Laboratory studies were performed to determine whether human pepsin was inactivated by pH 8.8 alkaline water. In addition, the buffering capacity of the alkaline water was measured and compared to that of the two most popular commercially available bottled waters.

The pH 8.8 alkaline water irreversibly inactivated human pepsin (in vitro), and its hydrochloric acid-buffering capacity far exceeded that of the conventional-pH waters.

Unlike conventional drinking water, pH 8.8 alkaline water instantly denatures pepsin, rendering it permanently inactive. In addition, it has good acid-buffering capacity. Thus, the consumption of alkaline water may have therapeutic benefits for patients with reflux disease.

Studies Show Alkaline Water Good for Digestive Health

Myth vs. Reality

If you’re reading up on alkaline water or studying the validity of health claims made about it, you will find a lot of skeptics and quotes like this one by holistic health guru Andrew Weil:

“There are no scientific studies to back up the many health claims made for alkaline water, and no research supporting the idea that alkaline water is any more hydrating than other types of water.”

While we do agree with some of what the good doctor is saying in his article, he is off base to claim that there are ‘no scientific studies to back up health claims for alkaline water’. While alkaline water is definitely not medicine there have been plenty of studies conducted that do prove it can be beneficial to your health.

The first is one we cited in our last post.

“The increasing dietary acid load in the contemporary diet can lead to a disruption in acid-alkaline homeostasis in various body compartments and eventually result in chronic disease through repeated borrowing of the body’s alkaline reserves. Adjustment of tissue alkalinity, particularly within the kidney proximal tubules, can lead to the more effective excretion of toxins from the body. Metabolic detoxification using a high vegetable diet in conjunction with supplementation of an effective alkalizing compound, such as potassium citrate, may shift the body’s reserves to become more alkaline.”

The second was conducted by the Japanese…

Japanese Studies on Alkaline Water

Medical research conducted in Japan shows that while alkaline water is not medicine, it can have a positive effect on digestive health. Japanese doctors routinely prescribe daily consumption of alkaline ionized water for mild cases of digestive upset. Clinical research has also proven that skeptics are wrong; the stomach does not completely neutralize the pH of the water!

Alkaline Water as an Antacid

Research conducted by Shiga Medical University at National Okura Hospital in Japan tested alkaline water’s effects as an antacid. They measured the pH levels in the stomach’s of 6 volunteers before and after consuming alkaline water. After consuming the water the volunteers stomach’s were measured over the next 24 hours and showed a visible increase in the pH of their stomach’s.

According to the results of this experiment, the water increased stomach alkalinity in all 6 volunteers by .5 pH to almost 1 pH. As a result researchers concluded that alkaline water demonstrates a mild antacid effect. What is most notable about the study results is that volunteers stomach pH rose in all cases, demonstrating clearly that alkaline water’s pH is not neutralized by stomach acid.

Alkaline Water for Gastrointestinal Health

digestive-systemWhile alkaline water isn’t a miracle cure and some brands may exaggerate claims about positive effects on health, there is one thing most scientists will agree on… that alkaline water can help the most in the areas it touches. Obviously this would mean the digestive system after you consume it – the stomach, the intestine, the kidneys, etc. can all benefit from the consumption of alkaline water.

Another test group of 25 patients with recurring digestive problems such as chronic diarrhea, constipation, abnormal fermentation in intestines, indigestion, acid indigestion, and other complaints was given alkaline water over a period of 2 weeks.

At the end of 2 weeks subjects were then interviewed to find out if there was any effect on their symptoms. Researchers noted improvement in 88% of the 25 patients. The study results revealed that that no patient’s symptoms got worse during the evaluation, and 12% reported no improvement in their condition.

While there are many scientific studies done on alkaline water it still has yet to be examined by the FDA.

The truth is almost always somewhere in the middle. Alkaline water is not a miracle cure or fountain of youth, however there are visible health benefits to consuming it.
